Finnegans Wake Pre-1969 Checklist

This page is the result of work carried out by Harold Ryan.

This page began its life as a preliminary attempt to compile a secondary bibliography of Finnegans Wake studies. It was cut short by the appearance of The James Joyce Checklist website, which does that and much more. The result of the original effort may still be useful to some and is left as-is for anyone wishing to consult it. It is in fact an almost-complete transcription of the Finnegans Wake section of the article "Criticism of James Joyce: A Selected Checklist" by Maurice Beebe, Phillip F. Herring and Walton Litz, published in the spring 1969 (vol. xv, no. 1) issue of Modern Fiction Studies. As such, it covers most of what has been published up to 1968-9 and illustrates the topics tackled by the first generation of trailblazers from 1939 to 1969 (with a few earlier and later items). The only portion of that article which has not been transcribed is "chapters in books" (other than chapters in Finnegans Wake anthologies). Thus you may find below three lists: (a) books and monographs about Finnegans Wake, (b) articles about Finnegans Wake, and (c) chapters in Finnegans Wake anthologies. Enjoy.

Where an item is available online, primarily through the University of Wisconsin's The James Joyce Scholars' Collection, edited by David Hayman, the item's title is a link to the online edition.
